Talk on the Street

You are going to hear a lot of talk about different situations, on-the-job, in the classroom; it’s human nature. When hearing this “chatter”, keep in mind there is always three (3) sides to every story; the two opposing sides, and somewhere in the middle is the third, the truth of the matter. If you want to know my perspective on something, call my office, my cell phone, or my home, I’d be more than happy to explain anything to anyone.

Attitude & Reputation

If I approach everything by kicking the dirt under my shoes and being convinced from the start that it’s going to be bad, then it will. It’s also shows others who I am; my reputation will be that of an ornery old cuss.  To be successful you need to check your approach. There is only one approach that will work, and that is a positive one, no matter what it is you are doing. You were given a great opportunity to get an education, learn a new trade at very little cost. You should feel indebted for the rest of your career. The trustees of the JATC as well as many other officers of this Local are extremely dedicated to improving things, do your part by being a positive force.

Upcoming Training

FEBRUARY WILL BE KNOWN AS SAFETY MONTH FOR THE LOCAL. Each Saturday morning will be for OSHA training, CPR & 1st Aid.  Completing this course will give you a 10 hour OSHA card and 1st Aid & CPR training, good for two years through Coyne. Apprentices have already taken this course this past February. In the future, we will offer more Safety topics; Arc Flash & NFPA70E, to name a few. There will be no cost to the individual for this training. Please call the JATC office to sign up for the course. If enough interest warrants a session before next February, we will certainly do just that.

I recognize our free time is important, I don’t like giving up mine either. But I also know that training is a crucial part of this local’s existence; it’s our selling point. We all, each & every one of us in this local, need to be well trained. Please, be true to your local & come to these presentations. We might even have some free food!!!!                                                                      On-line Training     For those interested, go on-line to www.journeymanprep.com  Log on using AugustaJATC as a user name & IBEW1253 as a password. Once in click below the “desk” that says JWprep e-courses. Tests can be taken to check your knowledge.

New  JATC Trustee

Bill Tims has been appointed to be a JATC trustee for the next three years. He, along with Wayne, and Jeff Strout represent Labor on the Committee & Greg Perron (ESB), Lance Leavitt (S&M), & Tina Riley (MOELCO) represent the Contractors.

This appointment was made by our President, Jeff Rose. Bill is replacing another Bill, Bill Berube who served a three year term. Thanks to both for your time & input.

JATC Challenge to the members

I offer a challenge to all members of this local. We recently voted to keep  this local sound financially, now we need to do more.  We tend to expect a very few individuals do everything in this local. This is fundamentally opposite to what makes unions strong.  We need to do things COLLECTIVELY, working together.  So are you up for the challenge when called upon ?

Construction Expo 2003

The Construction Expo is April 9th & 10th at the Augusta Civic Center. Show hours are 12:00 noon to 8:00pm on the 9th, & 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on the 10th. Please help out by giving up an hour or two to greet people & explain our program. Call the JATC office to sign up.

Building Your Files

I would like every member in the local to contact me by some means or another  with their “DATE OF EXPIRATION” on their license. This pertains mostly to Journeyman wireman, but I urge all to do so. This will benefit you if that information is in your file. It will also help me better plan the Code courses for the membership.

 Upcoming Events

We have been a little busy putting things together for you. Bill Heavener is working on a PLC course. PLEASE CONTACT THE JATC OFFICE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS TRAINING. I need to know how many are interested. I think we’ll actually do some programming with a Zilog board, so let me know. It should be a fun course as well as informative.

Ed Peteraf is putting on another 45 hour Code Course in April, so please contact me if interested. This will take place at the Labor Temple in Brewer on Saturdays, starting on the 26th @ 8:30am– 3:00pm for 8 weeks. Call me to sign up.
